Why Is Selling My Crochet So Hard?

Why Is Selling My Crochet So Hard?

It feels like it should be so easy. So many others seem to sell things so easy, they just seem to be able to put something up for sale on Facebook and it sells immediately. So why isn’t the same happening for your crochet, why is selling your crochet so hard?

Don’t Believe Everything You See

First things first – Don’t believe everything you see online. Just because someone is boasting about how many sales they’re making, it doesn’t mean they’re actually selling anything or even making a profit.

There is a buzz phrase that too many people buy into and follow as a mantra – “Fake It Until You Make It” and it means people fake how successful they are. The thought behind it is that if you pretend to be successful you will attract success.

This tactic doesn’t really work and instead just makes everyone else feel like they’re missing a trick and that online sales should be far easier than it actually is. It just creates a fake world for everyone and it’s why so many people have the illusion that making money online will be so easy.

It takes time to build an online audience who are interested in what you have to offer. It takes time and consistent effort to build the trust so that audience feels comfortable buying from you and having the confidence that they will receive a quality product.

If It Was Easy Everyone Would Do It

The second thing is, if selling crochet was easy everyone would be doing it. They’re not. Why? Because it’s hard work. Many crocheters start trying to sell their crochet and quickly run into obstacles. Their crochet doesn’t sell as easily as they thought, they have trouble deciding how to price things, they feel like no one is seeing what they have for sale and no one is appreciating the time and skill they put into their work. Then there is how social media works which makes you feel that EVERYONE is selling their crochet and like you have to compete with so many other businesses to make sales (that’s not true by the way).

So you end up feeling like it’s just not possible to make a living from your crochet and that selling your crochet is so hard – and it is hard.

If you were hoping that I would be telling you that there’s a secret trick you’re missing to make selling your crochet easier, well I’m sorry to disappoint. It’s simply not easy. It takes work, determination, consistency and a whole lot of learning. But if you keep going and put in the work then you can create a successful and profitable crochet business.

Creating a profitable crochet business that you can make a living from is not easy but it is so satisfying once everything clicks into place and you start seeing those profits rolling in. The pride of seeing what you created, what you are capable of is exhilarating and of course being able to run your own business and give yourself control of your time and your income is life changing.

But why is selling your crochet so hard?

Why It’s Not Easy To Sell Your Crochet

I have no doubt that your crochet is fabulous. It looks amazing and you have some serious skills that you deserve to profit from.

However being an amazing crocheter doesn’t mean you know how to sell. Crocheting and selling are two completely different skill sets and to make it in this world of business, you need to know how to do both really well. So you have a whole lot of learning to do.

As a independent venture you are a one person band. You are the marketing department, the financial department, IT, legal, customer services, operations, product development and business support. That’s a lot of hats you need to wear. Some of your life experience will help you manage some of these things, but unless you have run a business before then you have a lot of things to figure out.

In short being able to make a living from your crochet or any profit at all is going to take time. You need time to get things up and running and time to learn how to use the tools available to you.

Where To Start

Start slow and start simple. With so much to learn you don’t want to make your life harder by making your crochet business more complicated than it needs to be.

To get started selling your crochet all you need is:

  • A product to sell
  • A way to take payments
  • A way to share your product with potential customers
  • A newsletter list

This can take shape in two ways:

  1. Use a social media platform to sell and to share your crochet with potential customers. Set up business accounts with Paypal and/or Stripe to take payments. Set up a newsletter list.
  2. Use Etsy or Shopify to sell and take payments. Have a social media platform to share your crochet with potential customers. Set up a newsletter list.

Both of these strategies are fairly simple to set up and can get you up and running quickly. I would recommend going with option 2 as being on a 3rd party platform like Etsy is going to get your crochet found in Google searches too which is going to help you massively as it allows you to reach a much bigger audience than by just using social media alone – discover more about the benefits of selling on Etsy here

Both of these methods are low cost and you can get everything set up either for free or for less than $20 if you use the start up options. There isn’t a whole lot of tech involved either and all platforms have great easy to follow guides to walk you through the set up process.

There are many ways to get your crochet business started, but this is the simplest way that opens up the widest audience and that will also bring you the biggest benefits in the long run. Especially if you do these 5 things in your crochet business everyday.

Now what?

Knowing what you need to do and actually doing it are two completely different things. You will find yourself with questions and turning yourself into knots when you start seeing all the different options and opinions coming your way.
